During the middle of the 20th century neon signs turned America's roadsides into a luminous wonderland. The most compelling signs were figural: imaginative cartoon drawings in light. As the urban landscape turned into homogenized monotony, the unfortunate demise of these creative depictions, such as exploding bowling balls and lassoing cowboys, has left the country's nightscape somewhat impoverished.
